Strictly Ballroom (1992)

In my opinion, I found this movie to be quite fairy tale-ish but it was still interesting to watch.
So in this movie, apart from the common themes that we can see in this movie such as how the dance federation manipulate the people to comply, conform and obey
or that it takes a lot of courage to fight against being socially influenced.

I actually noticed another angle in the character Scott and would want to elaborate on it,
and that angle is that he went through an identity crisis.
Using Marcia's Social Identity Status theory,
we saw that Scott was in the Identity Foreclosure stage in the beginning.

Identity foreclosure:
It is where the individual have not gone through an identity crisis and would just conform to what others expect of him/her to be in the future. The individual would commit to goals, values and roles that have been set for him/her.

This was of course very apparent in the show as
Scott even emphasized in the film that it was HIS goal since 6 to win the Pan-Pacific championship.
When it was in fact his mother, Shirley Hastings and also his dance teacher, Les goal;
they were the one's who have been deciding for Scott where he should be heading.

Halfway through the show we saw Scott going through Identity Moratorium.

Identity Moratorium:
Where the individual now faces with identity crisis and is trying to figure out who he/she really is but have not decided who he/she wants to become.

This can be seen when he started to dance with Fran and spending time with her family.
He discovered a different side of himself and that is: he should not live his life in fear,
instead have the courage to step out of being controlled by others.
Of course, later we saw that he was in a search again when Barry told Scott about his father's past,
and we saw that he went back to conforming to his dance teacher and his mother's goals.

Somewhere at the end, only did we saw Scott going through the final stage which is Identity Achievement.

Identity Achievement:
It is when the individual has decided to commit to a certain goal, values or roles that he/she personally chooses.

This happened when Scott's dad stepped out and
told him the truth and ended with a phrase that helped Scott to solidify his identity which was
"We lived our lives in FEAR"
It triggered in him that he should have stuck to what he truly believed - dancing the way he wants to and not be bound by a certain law/committee

And as a finale we saw that he finally danced with Fran and
that everyone in his family including his dance teacher
finally accepted his decision and supported Scott.

Of course we know, that this stages usually does not occur this fast,
but it was nice to see this theory being applied in this movie.

As a final note, I personally like this movie - it's very enjoyable to watch.
The scene that I enjoyed the most was when they danced the Paso Doble at the end!
It was AMAZING!! I really could not stop watching it over and over!
