Whale Rider (2002)

I really enjoyed watching this movie!!

Reasons why I enjoyed this movie:

1. Portrayal of the Maori tribe and its culture!

I'll be honest -
It is actually my first time having an idea of how the tribe looks like and how their lifestyle has changed.
It caught my attention as it was something new and it has added knowledge for me.
I did not realize that they had been influenced by the culture of alcohol and smoking;
in my mind I had always picture them as a group of people who will always be true to their traditions.

Apart from their lifestyle - I really enjoyed listening to their language!!
It's very unique and pleasant to listen to - Especially when they are chanting/singing!

Their culture that I found to be unique:
a. The Marae
b. The way they greet each other.
c. Mau Rakau (stick fighting)

2. Pai's strong will and bond to the land to lead the people!

I totally respect Pai!!
She is one girl who keeps her emotions in check
and fought all the way to be acknowledged be Koro.
She could have "ran away" from the pain of rejection BUT she decided not too!!

She came back and learnt the old ways of leadership in the Maori tribe.
Despite being caught and scolded by Koro countless times - Pai kept staying strong.
Pai really loved this land, the culture and the people - as we can see from how
she was brave enough to tell off people to stop smoking even though they are older than her.
Also from the fact that she felt deep inside that her home is in New Zealand
and that she should remain here!

3. Nanny Flowers
SHE IS THE BOMB!! =D
I would be honored if I had her as my granny!!
She is someone who is open to changes in traditions.
She knows that Pai will go through a real tough time when she grows up
and did all she could to support and be on Pai's side.

Although we can see some resentment she have for Koro,
she still took care of him when he fell into a deep sorrow
because non of the boys were able to retrieve his reiputa.

In conclusion, I liked the ending when all the people gather together
to do the haka, the chant and rowing the waka!!

It is wonderful to see this unique and fascinating culture being preserved for the future generations.
It somewhat motivated me to want to keep some interesting traditions that are in my family.
